What is microneedling?

Microneedling is a cosmetic procedure that involves using tiny needles to create a series of minimal, evenly spaced puncture wounds. Though the wounds are small, they will still trigger your body’s healing response to produce more collagen, one of your skin’s most important building blocks.

Microneedling is suitable for all skin types and can help with wrinkles, sun damage, hyperpigmentation, and acne scars. The most popular use of microneedling is on the face, but you may receive it almost anywhere on your body, including to remove stretch marks on the abdomen, thighs, and back. When your skin regenerates after the procedure, it’ll improve the appearance of these conditions.

What should I expect from a microneedling treatment?

Before microneedling begins, one of Mari’s estheticians will apply a topical anesthetic gel to the treatment area, which will render the procedure nearly painless. Then, your esthetician will use a pen-like device with a cartridge containing tiny needles on the end to create pinpricks in the top layer of your skin.

Depending on the size of the treatment area, microneedling can take between 20 and 60 minutes. Facial treatments, which are most common, take between 20 and 30 minutes. When the anesthesia wears off, you may feel some pain, and your skin may be red, which will fade within a few hours.

In the days following your first treatment, you may find that your skin appears more radiant as a result of the stimulation it received from the procedure. However, it’ll take one to two weeks for your body to start generating new collagen, leading to noticeably younger, healthier looking skin. These changes are gradual and subtle at first, which is why you should wait at least six weeks between treatments. You’ll also see the best results from multiple treatments  — four to six for most people.

Can microneedling be combined with other cosmetic treatments?

The regenerative effects of microneedling can nicely complement other skin care procedures, including chemical peels, photofacials, microdermabrasion, and laser resurfacing. Mari will discuss your goals with you and go over your options, which will help you to understand how microneedling can fit into your cosmetic treatment plan.
